Background of the Study
Shift work, commonly used in healthcare settings to ensure continuous patient care, can have significant implications for the health of workers, especially nurses. The demanding nature of shift work, which often involves night shifts, irregular hours, and long work periods, disrupts the body's circadian rhythm and sleep patterns. This disruption has been associated with an increased risk of various health problems, including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Nurses, as primary caregivers in hospitals, are particularly vulnerable to the effects of shift work due to their extended working hours, high stress levels, and physically demanding tasks. Studies have shown that shift work can lead to higher blood pressure, an increased risk of heart disease, and other cardiovascular complications. The impact of shift work on the cardiovascular health of nurses in Nigeria, particularly in hospitals like Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, has not been extensively studied. This research aims to examine how shift work affects the cardiovascular health of nurses working at this institution.
Statement of the Problem
Nurses are integral to the functioning of hospitals, but their well-being, particularly their cardiovascular health, may be compromised due to the stresses and irregularities associated with shift work. Although there is evidence linking shift work with cardiovascular problems in general populations, the specific effects on nurses in Nigerian healthcare settings remain unclear. At Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, the impact of shift work on the cardiovascular health of nurses has not been adequately investigated. Without a clear understanding of these effects, healthcare administrators may struggle to implement necessary interventions to protect the health of nursing staff. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing how shift work influences the cardiovascular health of nurses at this hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in different departments of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria. The study will examine the relationship between shift work and cardiovascular health, specifically looking at factors like blood pressure and other risk indicators. The limitations of the study include potential bias in self-reported data, as nurses may underreport or overreport their health status. Additionally, the study may not account for all variables that influence cardiovascular health, such as lifestyle choices or pre-existing health conditions.
